C Fleet

C Fleet is part of the OTB area that is dedicated to providing an introductory program for young sailors. The Club owns International Cadets (4) and International Optimist dinghies (9) that are utilised by C Fleet. At the end of the C Fleet course, we would expect C Fleet sailors to either gain a crewing position on a privately owned boat or choose to buy and race their own boat. There is also the option of leasing one of the Club's International Cadets for a season.

Any enquiries regarding C-Fleet can be made via the SYC Office during business hours. The contact is:

C Fleet is designed for Girls and Boys between 8 – 14 years of age who are in-between Sailing School and buying a boat.

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

Parents and Guardians of C Fleet participants are expected to participate in the running of the program irrespective of their level of sailing experience. This not only assists us in the running of the program but it also assists new families to integrate into club life.

We actively encourage parents to assist in all aspects of running C Fleet: some man the inflatables, assist in the canteen and the remainder are taken on the club’s committee boat to start and observe the “Racing” and take part in the race management processes. By participating, parents and guardians also gain an understanding of yacht club life and racing at club level.

The format of a C Fleet session may vary depending on the weather and the abilities of the group, but generally the format is mini-races so that the sailors gain practical sailing experience as well as an introduction into racing and racing rules. This is not designed to cater for the more competitive youngsters, but it is our view that the race format offers better sailing training. Upon completion of C Fleet the young sailor will be confident to participate in club races and also have an understanding of basic sailing rules and race administration procedures.
