In 2011 SYC will celebrate its Centenary Year. The actual date that the Club was formed in 1911 is uncertain due to the loss of early records as the result of fire but we believe that it was in September.
A Planning Committee under the Chairmanship of Vice Commodore Steve Richards and comprising Kevin Wood , Graeme Disney , Kate Mitchell , David Lynch and Naomi Smith has been formed. They have been meeting since October last year
It is planned to have a Centenary Year of Celebrations throughout the year culminating with the 2011 Open Day. The various events will embrace all areas of the club’s activities , provide for members’ interests and also involve the local community. The proposed program will include : 25 years plus Members Lunch ; Corporate Day ; Centenary Yacht Race ; Motor Boat Rally ; Art Show ; Community Open Day ; International Piano Recital Dinner ; OTB Sailing Day ; Ladies Lunch ; Schools Competition ; Centenary Ball. Other events may include : a Concours Day ; Kooyong Tennis Competition ; Food and Wine Dinner ; Alfresco Long Lunch ; Inter Schools Sailing Regatta.
Responsibility for overseeing the various events has been allocated to the members of the planning committee. Sub committees involving the members of the club are being formed to develop the relevant activities. If you are interested in contributing please contact Naomi Smith .
A Centenary Year book will be published covering the life of the club over the past 100 years. A historian to professionally write the book has been engaged. Graeme Disney will be collaborating with the author and assisting with research. If you have past records of the club history or relevant memorabilia please contact Graeme Disney as it could be of invaluable assistance.
2011 will be a year to reflect on the growth and success of our club over the past years , a time to be proud as a member of what has been achieved , to enjoy participating in the 100 years celebrations and to look forward with absolute confidence to the positive future of our great Club.
