Six time State Titleholder and defending champion, Luke Reinhr and his crew from SYC had to settle for runner up again in this year’s hard fought series sailed at Hobsons Bay YC over the weekend 13-15 January.
The winner, from Blairgowrie YS was Up’ n Go helmed by Gary Mackinven. Sandy can claim some kudos however, with three of Up ‘n Go’s crew being SYC members, viz Simon Grain, Noel Duffy and Brian Robinson. The fith crew member was Chris Ash from Blairgowrie.
The rivalry between Intrusion and Up ‘n Go is becoming legendary with only a single point separating the pair this year. These two boats have featured as the winners in the past six years, with the score after 2012 at three titles a piece (with one win going to a count back). The Up ‘n Go crew like the heavier breezes and scored well enough to be ahead at the end of Saturday’s racing, a second in the lighter first race on Sunday morning to Luke meant that Up ‘n Go didn’t have to sail the last race to win. They did and ended up with a fourth for their drop. Luke scored wins in both the lighter Sunday races.
Intrusion and Up ‘n Go whist reigning supreme at the head of the seventeen strong fleet in this year’s series can count on some intense competition from the strengthening fleet at HBYC in coming years. Third in 2012 was Outlaw skippered by Giles Lesser and fourth was Skipjack helmed by Bill Feore. Both these boats from HBYC. SYC boat Good Question with John Roberston came in a very creditable fifth.
The S80 one design from the board of Kim Swarbrick continues to thrive on Port Phillip. Next year’s State Titles are provisionally slated for SYC.
