Training Focus for Sandringham Y.C. - 5th December 2007

Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) will have a focus on training through its new $11.75 million Clubhouse which is due for completion in late 2008.

SYC CEO Richard Hewett said that the new Clubhouse will include specific training areas: “The Sandringham Yacht Club clubhouse will include a lage auditorium and classroom specifically designed for training,” Mr Hewett said. “The Club is a Registered Training Organisation and provides vocational training including the Diploma of Resort Management, Marine through the William Angliss Institute of TAFE.”

“In addition to that, we will be conducting Certificate courses in Boating Services in conjunction with Holmesglen Institute of TAFE,” he added.

The auditorium and classroom are being built at a cost of $875,000, half of which was raised by way of an Australian Government Grant: “This is a true partnership between the membership of this Club and the Australian Government to provide vocational training to bring people up to an employable level of skills in the marine and boating industries,” said Mr Hewett.

The Hon. Andrew Robb, Federal Member for Goldstein and the Minister for Vocational Training was present at the groundbreaking ceremony signifying the commencement of work on the new clubhouse on November 14, 2007.

Sandringham Yacht Club also provides training for 25 local schools as well as many community service based groups including Sandringham Secondary College and Variety Children’s Charity.

Sandringham Yacht Club is the only yacht club in Victoria to hold Registered Training Organisation (RTO) status and is one of only a handful of sporting bodies to hold that status in the State.

“We were thrilled to gain our RTO accreditation,” said Richard Hewett. “It clearly shows the Club’s commitment to becoming a nationally-recognised training organisation and we are equally pleased to be co-delivering our courses with the William Angliss Institute of TAFE and the Holmesglen Institute of TAFE.
