SYC C-Fleet Program – October – December 2012
Applications are now open to join Sandringham Yacht Club’s C-Fleet Program.
What is C-Fleet?
C-Fleet is the entry level Off The Beach (OTB) program for young sailors 7-14 years, in transition from the successful completion of Tackers 2 or Tackers 3 sailing programs or by assessment by the C-Fleet Co-Ordinator and/or delegate.
The safe harbour of Sandringham Yacht Club provides young sailors the opportunity to extend their sailing experience and build confidence on the water. It’s a great way to meet new friends, practice sailing techniques and to develop an understanding of basic racing rules. C-Fleet is designed to introduce sailors and their families to racing in a fun and simple environment.
At the completion of the C-Fleet program, C-Fleeters will be able to either crew in an International Cadet or purchase their own Optimist. They will be encouraged to join in Club racing – either in “Green Fleet” or in the main fleet. There is also the option of leasing one of the club’s boats for a season.
How does C-Fleet work?
The C-Fleet program will run over 7 sessions from February through to end of March. You will sail in one of the Club’s Training Optimists. After the sessions have finished, you will be able to sail in one of the Club Training Optimists in “Green Fleet” or the main fleet during the Winter Series. There is also the option of leasing one of the club’s boats for a season.
The program is coached by volunteer parents and members and is designed to encourage a life long love of the sailing – either socially or seriously.
Much of the C-Fleet program involves improving boat-handling skills while participating in fun on water games and activities. This is balanced with an introduction to racing and racing rules for those that are ready.
What sailing experience do I need to have?
To participate in C-Fleet you need to have completed Tackers 2 or Tackers 3 or by assessment by the C-Fleet Co-Ordinator and/or delegate.
You must also be a Junior Member of Sandringham Yacht Club.
What is expected of C-Fleet parents?
C-Fleet is a program that requires commitment from C-Fleet parents/guardians. An important aspect of C-Fleet is to introduce parents and families to the concept of sailing and what it means to be part of the Club environment. Parents/guardians are required to attend all C-Fleet sessions with their children. We actively encourage parents to assist in all aspects of the C-Fleet program. Some parents enjoy supervisory roles and others choose to observe the training on the Club’s committee boat to get up close to the action.
What is the Cost?
There is no charge for participating in this program. However, here are limited places and usually we have waiting lists. Therefore, non-attendance (without a valid reason) could jeopardise your child’s place in the program.
C-Fleet Calendar
C-Fleet takes place on Sunday mornings, commencing at 9:00am and concluding at 11:30am.
- C-Fleet will commence back again in October 2012
