Sail Sandy Regatta 2008

This regatta is intended to promote the skills of OTB sailors competing in large fleet racing.  The regatta will also provide a venue for associations and training squads to bring their members together for a regatta early in the summer sailing season.

This years Sail Sandy Regatta 2008 conducted by Sandringham Yacht Club for off the beach sailors saw a mixed fleet of almost 150 boats across a range of different classes enjoy great weather and fantastic sailing over the two days.

The fleet included Optimists, Sabots, Minnows, International Cadets, 125s, 420s, one 470, Contenders, Tasars, OK dinghies, Finns, Lasers of all denominations, 29ers, 49ers, International 14 ft skiffs and a lone but quite spectacular Bladerider foiler Moth.

This increasingly popular early season regatta is raced over 8 races, 4 per day, for each division and the overall winner is decided using the Yachting Victoria Class Yardstick. The overall winner this year was a very well sailed 125, MK2 sailed by Jim Scott & Will Morris. Second overall was Jack Graves in his Minnow OZONE from SSCBC with David McDiarmid and Andrew Archibald from SYC in their 49er BEACHED AS

National Jury to keep the sailors on their toes included Chairman Neville Willis, Darren Eger, Peter Little and International Jurors Rob Ware and Noel Allen who is just back from Olympic duty in China.

Participants came from all over Victoria while a few welcome Interstate sailors made the journey too. The weather was superb with a warm 29 Deg C with a 12-15 knot northerly breeze on the Saturday followed by a cooler 21Deg C on Sunday with 10 -12 knot South westerly providing glorious sailing conditions. PRO John Middleton kept a tight rein on proceedings over the 56 separate races and the regatta ran like clockwork to the acclaim of competitors across the fleet. Many of the classes enjoyed exceptionally close racing with exciting finishes the order of the day.

The on-shore OTB canteen did a roaring trade staffed by ever cheerful volunteers and the regatta was a ton of fun for all competitors. A vast army of Club volunteers made the whole event happen under the inspired leadership of Steve Aulich and the SYC OTB Committee. Sail Sandy 2009 promises to be even bigger and better.
