Vale: Arthur “Tubby” Wright

Thursday, 21st May 2015

Arthur “Tubby” Wright passed away on Wednesday 18 May 2015, aged 84 after a prolonged fight with prostate cancer, a re-infecting knee replacement and high blood pressure. Born in U.K., Tubby and his younger brother Bill learned to sail as sea scouts on the Thames before migrating to Australia with their parents and joined SYC in 1967. He sailed with various members, early on with Maynard (he and Maynard both worked for Toyota) and Sadie Mappin on Carayia, a wooden boat Sadie and Maynard built themselves and sailed extensively to various places in Bass Strait; with David Strong in his Carbeneer Seabird II, and others.   Both Caraiya (Fred Nicolosi) and Seabird ll are still in the SYC marina. For the last 15 years Tubby has been an enthusiastic member of Moana’s crew and just loved sailing, no matter how bad  the conditions were or where we finished, he would say – “It doesn’t matter…any day on the water is a good day!” Though not very mobile and hard of hearing lately Tubby was very experienced and was a good crew member. Everyone liked him for what he was – a good, gentle man who never complained and never criticised.
